The Gift of Being a Mentor

May 20th, 2008 · No Comments

When I  first joined Leads Club, I was so happy to hear that it had a mentor program.  An older member of leads buddying up with a new member to help them through the first few months in the Club.

I have had many mentors in my lifetime.  Some were extraordinary some were at best plain old bad.  But I did learn that even the bad ones will teach you something.  Mostly the bad ones were a good example of how not to do things.  How if you manipulate people you will be manipulated and all that you have worked for will crumble into dust before your very eyes. The best mentors were the ones that were more interested in me than some wonderful answer they were saying.  They were always asking me questions, always probing, seeking the next place to stretch themselves.

So I am delighted to pass along some of the gems of wisdom I learned along the way from my best mentor, my old dog Jack.

He taught me to be interested in others, greet each person like he is the only thing in the room.  Listen to each word they say.  Always be happy to see someone, even if it’s only been a few moments since you last saw them.  And take a nap each day.
